Meet John Doe Reporter Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) is the author of a fake letter from an unemployed John Doe who threatens suicide on Christmas Eve in protest of all the world's injustices. Heartfelt sympathy sweeps across the nation for this imaginary hero, as well as boosting readership for Mitchell's newspaper. Wanting to cash in on this terrific public relations stunt, the owners of the paper go on a search for someone to play the role of John Doe. Enter Gary Cooper, who stars as John Willoughby, a vagabond hired to portray Doe. But he and Mitchell soon find themselves in over their heads when "John Doe Fever" spreads, starting a political movement.
